We organise interdisciplinary workshops and meetings for the Yanomami community with the aim of finding solutions about the issues arising from the relatively recent contact (circa 1950). Sociopolitical themes are tackled and discussed, such as territorial management, indigenous organization, indigenous school education, as well as problematics such as alcoholism and nutrition.
Rios Profundos was created in 1996 by Dirk van Dijck with the purpose of supporting the Yanomami way of life. Since 2001, Rios Profundos has worked toward the creation of a space for the Yanomami to discuss the economy, politics and culture of the outside world.
Our aim is to promote the autonomy of the Yanomami people of the Marauiá river, and more generally, of the Yanomami people of the State of Amazonas in Brazil
Who are we?
The coordinator of Rios Profundos, Anne Ballester Soares, has been living for the last twenty years among the Yanomami people of the Marauiá. She's a fluent speaker and writer of the Yanomami language and the only non-Yanomami (napeu) speaker in the state of Amazonas.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
